A song only sounds right in tune. Melodic’s tuner is ready before every song, set to the tuning the song needs, with a needle for getting close and a strobe for getting it exact.

What it does

Close fast, exact at the end

  • A needle on a spring. It swings like a real meter, so you can see which way to turn.
  • A strobe for fine tuning. It drifts the way you’re out and stands still when you’re spot on.
  • The note, its frequency and how many cents out, big enough to read from across the room.
  • Every string of the tuning, with a tick on each one you’ve tuned. Pick a string to lock onto it.
  • Chromatic mode tunes to the nearest note, whatever you play.
  • A pitch trace of the last few seconds, so a wobbly note shows as a wobbly line.
  • Your input level against the noise gate, so you know the tuner can hear you.
  • Hear the note: it plays the note you’re tuning to on a modelled guitar, for tuning by ear.

Step by step

How to tune your guitar

  1. Play one string

    Pick one string and let it ring. Muting the others with your fretting hand helps the tuner hear just that one.

  2. Read the needle

    Left of centre means the string is flat: tighten it. Right of centre means it’s sharp: loosen it. Small turns, and give the needle a moment.

  3. Come up to the note

    If you go past it, loosen below the note and come back up. Strings hold their tuning better when you tune up to the note.

  4. Stop the strobe

    When the needle is centred, watch the strobe. When it stands still, that string is in tune and gets a tick.

  5. Check them all again

    Tuning one string can pull the others a little, especially on a new set of strings, so play each one once more.
